Ampersand Ventures can be traced back to the early days of private equity. Initially established in 1969 as an internal venture capital investment program that concentrated specifically on technology at PaineWebber, the company later branched off from PaineWebber in 1988 to become its own entity. The company chose to diverge from traditional private equity strategy by solely focusing on the Specialty Materials and Chemicals (SMC) industry.
