For centuries, Polo was only perceived as a grass-based sport, played on fields so large that it was easy for the spectators to feel detached from the action of the game. This all changed in 2004 when Sam Katiela, brought Beach Polo to life on the sands of Dubai, with mamemo organizing the annual tournaments, which helped increase the understanding of the sport and change the perception of traditional Polo. From that one event in Dubai in 2004, Beach Polo has inspired many similar tournaments in more than 36 destinations worldwide. Beach Polo Cup Dubai has also earned numerous awards, including the coveted Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award Order of Merit. It has also gained the official support, including the Patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Sports Council over several years, which has further elevated the recognition of the sport on a local and international level.
