Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is a national organization established in 1983 with the mission of rescuing retired Thoroughbred horses from neglect, abuse, and slaughter. The organization is renowned for its pioneering TRF Second Chances program, which provides vocational training to incarcerated individuals through equine care and stable management. This initiative not only offers a second career to the horses but also provides inmates with a chance for rehabilitation.
At present, TRF provides care for 550 rescued and retired Thoroughbreds across Second Chances prison farms and Sanctuary Farms nationwide. The organization relies solely on private donations, and it holds accreditations from the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and has received a Platinum rating with GuideStar.
