About Young Playwrights'​ Theater

Young Playwrights' Theater (YPT) is an education-focused nonprofit organization that aims to inspire young people to realize the power of their own voices. Founded by award-winning playwright Karen Zacarías in 1995, YPT has steadily expanded its programming over the last 25 years to serve more than 1,000 young people aged 8-24 annually in Washington, DC, and areas of Northern Virginia and Maryland. Their work is supported by a dedicated staff and a roster of more than 50 professional teaching artists, actors, and theater artists. YPT's initiatives include programs for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as college-level programs. Notably, in 2014, YPT launched Silence is Violence, an annual social justice performance series. The organization's efforts have garnered recognition, earning them the 2010 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the highest national award for organizations in their field. Their most recent backing came through a grant investment from The Genesis Inspiration Foundation in December 2023, signifying continued support for YPT's impactful endeavors within the educational sector, particularly in the United States.
