In 1996, Alta Partners was established by four senior partners of Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co. (BEDCO), which was an early-stage venture capital firm founded in 1979. BEDCO invested in life sciences, information technology, and communications. At present, Alta manages five venture fund programs that have about $1 billion of committed capital. They have financed approximately 120 life sciences and information technology companies since their inception in 1996.
