Zero Carbon Humber is a pioneering partnership focused on spearheading the development of the world's inaugural zero carbon industrial cluster and facilitating the decarbonization of the Humber region. Comprising a coalition of businesses, this collaboration is dedicated to orchestrating the transformation of the Humber into the globe's premier carbon neutral industrial cluster by 2040. The initiative encompasses a multitude of low carbon and decarbonization projects, accompanied by the requisite interlinking infrastructure, aimed at revolutionizing the Humber industrial cluster through the widespread implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and large-scale Hydrogen production.
The distinguished Zero Carbon Humber consortium boasts a formidable lineup of partners including Equinor, Drax, National Grid, Mitsubishi, Centrica, SSE, British Steel, ABP, and PX Group. Each partner contributes unparalleled expertise in their respective domains, alongside extensive international acumen and decades of local community involvement. The project serves to intertwine a spectrum of innovative advancements and existing energy-intensive industries across the region via a comprehensive hydrogen and carbon capture pipeline, underscoring the pivotal role of shared infrastructure in realizing these distinctive prospects.
The Humber stands as the United Kingdom's largest carbon-emitting industrial cluster, traditionally reliant on energy-intensive sectors such as refining, steel production, and chemicals, which form the backbone of its employment and skill set. Zero Carbon Humber emerges as a primary avenue for enabling these established industries to decarbonize their operations and reduce emissions, without eliciting adverse economic or societal repercussions. Remarkably, it pledges to yield tens of thousands of new job opportunities in the region, bolstering skills, apprenticeships, and educational pathways.
Most crucially, this initiative is poised to elevate the Humber's standing as the UK's Energy Estuary, positioning it as a world-leading international net-zero exemplar, primed to attract inbound investments and galvanize future growth for forthcoming generations. The recent grant investment secured on 17 March 2021 from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund underscores the significance and trajectory of this groundbreaking enterprise within the ESG and Renewable Energy sectors.
