Downtown Durham, Inc.

Downtown Durham, Inc. (DDI) is a 501(c) 6 organization established in 1993 with the mission of driving economic development and cultural vibrancy in downtown Durham. Over the past 20 years, DDI has overseen investments of more than $1.7 billion, transforming downtown into a thriving environment capable of sustaining further business, retail, and housing growth. During this period, the population has grown from 160 residents to over 1,500, while more than 300 new businesses have been added to the area. Additionally, annual visitors have increased by over 1 million, and nearly 2 million square feet of new office space have been developed. Future investments are set to raise the total invested amount to nearly $2 billion.

In 2012, DDI took on the responsibility of the downtown Durham Business Improvement District, an area covering 0.8 miles where property owners are levied a small additional tax. This revenue is utilized by the district to fund the Ambassadors program, which supplements city maintenance services and supports district-wide placemaking and marketing initiatives that benefit businesses in the area.
