About ORCA Hub

Orca Hub is a pioneering research program that focuses on developing Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Autonomous Systems for the offshore sector. Founded in 2017 and headquartered in the United Kingdom, the initiative involves a consortium of five esteemed universities: Heriot-Watt University, the University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, the University of Oxford, and the University of Liverpool. Supported by over thirty industry partners, the project is dedicated to revolutionizing Asset Integrity Management to enhance production efficiency and safety in the offshore industry. Led by the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics (ECR), this joint venture between Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh is driving research and discovery science in various domains including Mapping, Surveying & Inspection, Planning, Control & Manipulation, Human-Robot Interaction with Explainable AI, and Robot & Asset Self-Certification. The recent £2.50M grant investment on 17 June 2021 by UK Research and Innovation highlights the significance and potential of this initiative in the realm of Robotics, AI, and Autonomous Systems. Orca Hub aims to collaborate closely with industry partners to advance technologies across the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale. Ultimately, the initiative endeavors to commercialize research outcomes and discover science for the benefit of the UK offshore supply chain, bolstering its productivity and establishing autonomous and semi-autonomous offshore energy fields as a long-term vision.
