About Smart Africa

Smart Africa is a transformative initiative that originated from the Transform Africa Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda in October 2013. The Smart Africa Manifesto, adopted by 7 African Heads of States, has received widespread endorsement, elevating its significance to the entire African Union. This initiative has garnered support from various influential entities including the African Development Bank, with the most recent $1.50M grant investment received on 17th December 2021.

The Smart Africa Alliance serves as the operational arm, uniting African countries and key organizations such as the AU, ITU, World Bank, GSMA, and ICANN, to facilitate the effective execution and monitoring of the Smart Africa Manifesto. With a strong focus on Policy, Access, e-Government, Private Sector/Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable Development, the initiative is aligned with five key pillars. Additionally, four cross-cutting enablers - Innovation, Communications and Advocacy, Capacity Building, and Resource Mobilization - are embedded within the framework to provide crucial support for the implementation process.

Smart Africa's mission and strategic framework highlight its commitment to driving economic growth and job creation in the region. With a unique focus on Government and Military, Information Technology, Smart Africa's headquarters in Rwanda solidifies its dedication to driving technology-led development within the continent. This forward-thinking initiative is poised to be a significant catalyst for positive change and progress in African societies, especially in the realm of ICT and sustainable development.
